Venescia Francis-Banfield

Venescia is a partner of Francis-Banfield Chambers and Head of Chambers. She is a leading Barrister in Grenada and handles matters in all areas of law and her specialty extends to criminal law.

Venescia was the Chairman of the Youth Offending Team at Thurrock Council, Thurrock, Grays in Essex, England from 2004 to 2005 wherein she played a pivotal role in curtailing youth offences and other related crimes, whilst channelling youth offenders to training and work programmes for the local council.

She represented the Prime Minister of Grenada & Petit Martinique in several cases and also the State of Grenada in leading cases with Capital Bank International Limited and criminal charges brought against 7 police officers over the wrongful death of Oscar Bartholomew (Deceased Canadian citizen who died in police custody in Grenada) both at High Court and Appeal levels.

Venescia served as a Director of the Board of Directors of the Point Salines International Airport now the Maurice Bishop International Airport, The Board of Directors of the Housing Authority of Grenada, the Tax Appeal Board and as Chairman of the National Insurance Board of Appeal.

Notable Cases

R v Frederick Noel aka Bala to defend the Defendant who was a former bodyguard of the ruling Prime Minister, the Honourable Keith C. Mitchell in a shooting incident

R v Wayne Wilson defended a current Inspector of Police with the Royal Grenada Police Force in charges of forgery and uttering a forged document

R v Desmond Martin to defend the Defendant in sexually related offences

Hugh Wildman v The Judicial and Legal Services Commission, prosecuted for the Claimant over allegations surrounding his conduct and competence of his appointment as Attorney General of Grenada

Civil Appeal – Capital Bank International Limited v Nazim Burke (Minister of Finance) and the Attorney General of Grenada AND Minister of Finance and the Attorney General v Capital Bank International Limited, represented the Minister of Finance and the AG of Grenada on a winding up petition, wrongful appointment of a receiver et al over embezzlement charges ( approx. 12 matters)

Civil Appeal – The Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Magistrate and the Commissioner of Police over allegations of wrongful death against 7 police officers

Represented the Honourable Minister Gregory Bowen, Minister for Works etc and Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Grenada in RSM PRODUCTION CORPORATION, JACK J. GRYNBERG, and GRYNBERG PETROLEUM COMPANY v MIKHAIL FRIDMAN, LEN BLAVATNIK, LEV KORCHAGIN and GREGORY BOWEN, with leading Queens Counsels Edwin Glasgow and Desmond Browne, over allegations of bribery, for wrongful termination of an oil exploration licence and defending the claim for damages of US$500,000,000.00

Civil Claim – Terrance Forrester v Charlies Lui and the Attorney General of Grenada, represented the Claimant in seeking injunctive relief amongst other relief for compensation and damages for wrongful dismissal
