Kane Sharpe secures unanimous acquittals in 2-week forced and compulsory labour case, involving debt bondage and serious violence.
The issue was identification. The complainants gave evidence having independently picked out the defendant as their exploiter from an ID parade, producing multiple phone recordings featuring a male voice issuing them various threats and demands. The Crown instructed an expert forensic speech analyst who found ‘strong support’ for the voice being that of Kane’s client, whom had already pleaded guilty to multiple related drug offences. He gave evidence at trial.
Kane attacked the reliability of the witnesses, as well as numerous investigative and procedural failings in the case. The jury returned Not Guilty verdicts on all counts.
