Rónán McCann

Rónán joined Chamber in 2018 having been called to the bar in 2011 and previously practiced in the Thames Valley.

His recent cases have included defending as a led junior in an eleven-defendant grooming / child sexual exploitation case at Oxford Crown Court and also defending in an attempted machete attack against prison staff at HMP Bullingdon as junior alone.

His practice is focused on general crime including offences of violence, dishonesty and drug cases at all levels. Rónán is a fully accredited police station representative and has an enviable record of success at the Court of Appeal.

He is known for his calm manner and client care skills, in addition to his strength in mitigation and efforts to secure the best possible result. As led junior his experience include offences of murder, conspiracy to rape and grooming offences.


As junior alone his notable cases include:

R v M – Unanimous acquittal defending in a GBH between inmates at HMP Huntercombe.

R v B – Successful defence of a woman accused of burglary in the face of compelling scientific evidence.

R v AT – Defending against an allegation of sexual assault of a child under 13. Unanimous acquittal on retrial.

R v B & S– Robbery trial, involving a vulnerable defendant requiring an intermediary. Targeted disclosure requests resulted in no evidence being offered on the second day of trial.

R v W – Acquittal in a case involving detailed expert evidence in a case alleging of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence.

R v H – Unanimous acquittal in an allegation of PWITS Class A

R v B – Unanimous acquittal before Swindon Crown Court in a high profile case involving charity fraud in excess of £40,000

R v H – Acquittal of a man of good character accused of a night club sexual assault

R v S – Unanimous acquittal of a defendant with a substantial record for dishonesty offences in a case of burglary

R v H – Acquittal of a Church Minister accused of assault on a school child

R v B – Successful trial of issue regarding an allegation of PWITS Class A

R v M – Successful trial of issue regarding presence of a weapon in an allegation of harassment with threats of violence
